Brave new world or evolution?

The Internet has become a part of society in an incredible short period of time. As time progresses, wealth increases and humans grow smarter, new technology will therefore continue to thrive and develop.

In the sealed unit trade, the Internet is only just beginning to have an impact. E. commerce is not really suited to the industry at this time but eventually it will be.

At the moment, the Internet in this trade is suited to communication. It enables suppliers to communicate new offers, new products or service enhancements to a customer base quicker and easier than ever before.

The Internet can do much more than it currently does for the sealed unit industry. It can provide automated ordering, stock control and process management etc. Indeed a hard look at the industry would suggest that the Internet is perfectly suited to it. What acts as a brake is culture and technology take up.

For any company to invest heavily in a new way of doing business, it would like to have the majority of its customers ready and raring to go. That is not necessarily the case in this setting.

This perceived technological position has dictated that the development of the Internet in the sealed unit trade must be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. A step at a time, rather than giant step changes. This will make the development of e.commerce more painless, safer and more predictable.
